FAQ’S
-
Laminate flooring has a core made of compressed wood fibers (HDF) topped with a photographic layer that mimics wood or stone. It is water-resistant but can be damaged by standing water. Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP), on the other hand, is made from PVC or composite materials, making it fully waterproof and more durable in wet environments. Both offer realistic designs, but LVP is better suited for moisture-prone areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
-
Yes, luxury vinyl plank is 100% waterproof thanks to its PVC core and waterproof wear layer. This makes it ideal for installation in areas where water exposure is common, such as bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and laundry rooms. Its waterproof nature also makes cleanup easier and protects against spills, pet accidents, and humidity.
-
Traditional laminate flooring is designed to be water-resistant but not fully waterproof. It can withstand minor spills if cleaned up quickly but prolonged exposure to moisture can cause swelling or warping. Some modern laminates feature improved moisture barriers or waterproof cores, but generally, laminate is best installed in dry areas like living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways.
-
Both laminate and luxury vinyl flooring are designed for high durability. LVP offers excellent resistance to scratches, dents, and stains due to its tough wear layer and waterproof core. Laminate is highly scratch-resistant as well, making it good for families and pets, but it can be less forgiving to moisture and impact than vinyl. The longevity of both depends on product quality and maintenance.
-
For both flooring types, regular sweeping or vacuuming (without a beater bar) is recommended to remove dust and debris. Use a damp mop with a cleaner approved by the manufacturer avoid excessive water as standing moisture can damage laminate floors. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive tools that can dull the finish. Vinyl’s waterproof nature allows for easier cleaning even with occasional wet mopping.
-
Yes, both luxury vinyl plank and laminate can typically be installed directly over many existing floors such as tile, vinyl, or wood, provided the surface is clean, level, and stable. This floating floor installation saves time and cost. However, any unevenness should be corrected beforehand to prevent issues like plank separation or uneven wear.
-
Many luxury vinyl planks come with an attached underlayment that provides cushioning and sound absorption, so additional underlayment may not be necessary. Laminate flooring usually requires a separate underlayment to improve comfort, reduce noise, and protect against moisture. Choosing the right underlayment can improve the lifespan and feel of your floor.
-
Yes! Both use advanced digital printing technology and textured finishes to replicate the natural look and feel of hardwood or stone very convincingly. Many luxury vinyl and laminate products feature embossed grain patterns, hand-scraped textures, and varied plank sizes to create authentic, beautiful flooring options that suit any style or budget.
-
Luxury vinyl plank is an excellent choice for basements because it is fully waterproof and resists moisture-related problems like mold and warping. Laminate can be installed in basements if moisture is well-controlled and a moisture barrier is used, but it’s generally less recommended for below-grade areas compared to LVP.
-
With proper installation and care, luxury vinyl flooring can last 15 to 25 years, sometimes longer with higher-end products. Laminate flooring generally has a lifespan of 10 to 20 years depending on thickness, quality, and foot traffic. Regular maintenance and avoiding excessive moisture can extend the life of both.
